About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Estremoz opened on 2 May 1880 as an annex of the public library. Since 1972 it has been housed in the Largo D. Dinis, in a building of the 13th and 14th centuries that had previously served as a school and a charitable hospice. In 2003 it was named after the teacher Joaquim Vermelho, and in 2010 it joined the Rede Portuguesa de Museus (Portuguese Museum Network).
The permanent exhibition is spread over two floors. It shows folk art in horn, cork and wood, with works by master craftsmen such as Mestre Rolo and José Vinagre, Estremoz figurines from the 18th century to the present day, and local pottery from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is a reconstructed Alentejo house from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as sections on archaeology, sacred art, old painting and contemporary art, including a drawing collection.
The museum offers guided visits for the general public and free educational activities, such as making and painting an Estremoz figurine, potter's wheel workshops, a museum discovery game and a walking route around the Largo D. Dinis.
