About the museum
The museum is housed in a modernist house from 1958, designed by the architect José Carlos Loureiro, and was known as the Casa Marta Ortigão Sampaio. On 13 June 2026 it was presented to the city under its present name, which places at the centre of its mission the work and legacy of the painters Aurélia de Souza and Sofia de Souza, figures of Portuguese art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Marta Ortigão Sampaio (1897–1978), maternal niece of the two painters, bequeathed the house and the collections to the Porto municipal council in 1978. The museum opened to the public in 1996. The collection derives largely from the transfer of the furnishings of the home that Marta and her husband occupied in São Mamede de Infesta; the house on Rua de Nossa Senhora de Fátima was never lived in.
The painting collection includes works of Portuguese naturalism by authors such as Silva Porto, Carlos Reis, José Malhoa and Roque Gameiro, and an important group of paintings, drawings and photographs by Aurélia de Souza. It also holds about three hundred pieces of personal jewellery, from the late 17th to the 20th century, a library of art books, furniture of French, English and Indo-Portuguese influence, and other decorative arts. The garden has carved stones from the former Convento de São Bento de Avé-Maria, a small pond and trees such as magnolias and an Atlas cedar.
