About the museum
The Museu Militar do Buçaco opened on 27 September 1910, in the presence of King D. Manuel II, as part of the celebrations of the first centenary of the Battle of Buçaco, fought in 1810 between the Anglo-Portuguese army and the Napoleonic forces. It was extended and remodelled in 1962.
It is situated in the middle of the Mata do Buçaco, at the place of Almas do Encarnadouro, next to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória e Almas. During the battle, the chapel was used by the Discalced Carmelite friars of the neighbouring convent as a field hospital, where wounded men from both armies were treated.
The rooms display military objects and utensils from the early 19th century, uniformed figures, standards and medals, weapons, uniforms, prints, military and topographic maps, a 9-pounder field gun with its crew, and a model reproducing the positions of the battle. In the surrounding area visitors can also see the commemorative obelisk of 1873 and the command posts of Generals Craufurd, Massena and Wellington. The museum is property of the Portuguese Army.
