About the museum

The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia e Etnografia de Barrancos (Municipal Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of Barrancos) opened on 24 August 2007 and guides visitors through the history of the municipality via the traces left by people over time. It is housed in one of the most emblematic houses in the village, a 19th-century manor house with a central courtyard, converted into a small open-air amphitheatre for events, and two wood-fired ovens used for demonstrations of traditional bread-making.

The museum has three rooms. The archaeology room displays tools and artefacts from the Palaeolithic to the 18th/19th century. The second recreates the former municipal doctor's surgery, from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, with the furniture and instruments used by Barrancos' municipal doctors. The third hosts temporary themed exhibitions and displays the valuable ethnographic collection, assembled through donations, which bears witness to the traditions and sociocultural heritage of the municipality and its people.

The museum is part of the Rede de Museus do Baixo Alentejo (Network of Museums of Baixo Alentejo).
