About the museum
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Fregenal (MACF) is housed in the former convent of San Francisco in Fregenal de la Sierra, founded in 1563. The convent was dissolved under the disentailment (desamortización) of 1835–1836, and the building fell into ruin until, from 1995 onwards, a restoration directed by the architect Vicente López Bernal turned it into a cultural centre combining the Espacio para la Creación Joven (youth creation space), the municipal library and the museum.
The MACF displays the works that the town council acquires each year through the Eugenio Hermoso International Painting Prize. This competition has been held since 1981 by Fregenal de la Sierra town council, the Badajoz Provincial Council (Diputación) and the Junta de Extremadura, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious in the country. The collection already exceeds 130 works.
The museum has a permanent exhibition room, a temporary exhibition room and a workshop room, as well as display panels, computer equipment with digital information about the works, and Braille signage. It is part of MAMCE, the Map of Contemporary Art Museums of Spain of the University of Zaragoza.
