About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Loures has operated since 1998 at the Quinta do Conventinho, in Santo António dos Cavaleiros, in a former Franciscan convent of the Arrábida reform founded in the 16th century. The identity of the site was shaped by the successive occupants of the estate over the centuries, who left their mark on the architecture, art and landscape. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the azulejos of the cloister are among its outstanding features.
The museum's mission is to safeguard, study and publicise the local cultural heritage, with particular attention to the history of the municipality, archaeology and ethnography. It offers exhibitions, routes, guided visits and visitable storerooms, and houses the Centro de Documentação Anselmo Braamcamp Freire (Anselmo Braamcamp Freire Documentation Centre), a space dedicated to documents on local history and ethnography.
The complex includes a shop, the chapel and a large garden area with a café and terrace, as well as its own car park, which makes the estate a green refuge at the gates of Lisbon. The educational service offers guided visits, nature discovery activities and educational kits for families and schools.
