About the museum
The Museu Municipal Pedro Nunes was founded in 1894 with the archaeological collection of the Câmara Municipal and donations from Father Matos Galamba and Joaquim Correia Batista. It first operated in the Paços do Concelho (town hall) and, in 1914, moved to the Igreja do Espírito Santo, where it remains.
It closed in 2007 because of the advanced state of deterioration of the building. During the requalification, excavations on the site revealed archaeological remains with a chronology from the 3rd/4th century BC to the 19th century, spread over two metres of stratigraphy. After an investment of around €1.5 million by the municipality, the renovated space was inaugurated in April 2019.
The catalogue published in 2021 presents the pieces on display and some of the holdings, and covers Roman, Islamic and medieval Alcácer, trade in the former port area, and the figure of the mathematician and astronomer Pedro Nunes, a native of the town.
