About the museum
The Casa do Corpo Santo was the seat of the Confraria do Corpo Santo, a brotherhood of seafarers and fishermen whose origins go back to the 14th century, with statutes of 1340. In 1714, a date carved on the lintel of the courtyard gate, the brotherhood settled in this building, formed from several rooms transferred from the palace of the Cabedo family, adjoining the 14th-century city wall, on the Largo da Igreja de Santa Maria. In this area, archaeological excavations have revealed human occupation since the Roman city of Cetóbriga and pre-Roman remains.
Today it operates as a museum, with works from the collection of the Museu de Setúbal/Convento de Jesus. On the first floor, works of religious art from the 17th and 18th centuries are on display, including painting, sculpture and silverware, among which the Cofre do Sepulcro (Sepulchre Chest) stands out: it comes from the Convento de Jesus and is made of gilded carved wood, painted glass and mirrors from the last quarter of the 18th century. On the ground floor, the long-term exhibition “Instrumentos de Ciência Náutica” (Nautical Science Instruments) presents the collection donated by the physician Ireneu Cruz (1937–2011), which illustrates the building's former occupation by a brotherhood of seafarers and fishermen.
