About the museum
Number 12 of Rua Edmond Bartissol, in the São Domingos district, has been known since the late 19th century as the place of birth and childhood of the poet Bocage. The property was acquired by Edmond Bartissol, who gave it to the Setúbal municipal council to perpetuate the memory and legacy of the poet. Today it operates as a museum space dedicated to Bocage, which also houses the Arquivo Fotográfico Américo Ribeiro.
The long-term exhibition, “Bocage – Polémico. Discutido. Genial.” (“Bocage – Controversial. Debated. Brilliant.”), presents a view of the poet and his time, from the “pátrio Sado” (his native Sado river) to Lisbon, where he died, passing through the distant places where he was a poet, soldier and adventurer. There is also a gallery of temporary exhibitions, which gives access to a small garden used as an open-air auditorium.
The house also accommodates the Centro de Documentação e Biblioteca Bocagiana, with first editions, manuscripts and iconography linked to the poet, and the Arquivo Fotográfico Américo Ribeiro, with the negatives and prints of the photographer from Setúbal (1906–1992). On the upper floor, cameras, accessories and equipment from his studio are on display.
