About the museum

The Stredoslovenská galéria was founded on 1 September 1956 by separating from the Krajské vlastivedné múzeum as the Krajská galéria. Over the years it bore several names, such as Mestská galéria, Oblastná galéria and Štátna galéria in Banská Bystrica; since 2007 it has been called Stredoslovenská galéria, and since 2006 it has been managed by the Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj.

The gallery is a regional institution focused on collecting, researching and presenting modern and contemporary art. Its collection has more than 13,000 objects, mainly prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures; Slovak printmaking of the second half of the 20th century is almost completely represented. Among regional artists, the painter Dominik Skutecký stands out.

Exhibitions and educational activities take place in three historic buildings in the city centre. Short-term exhibitions alternate in the Pretórium and in the Bethlenov dom. In the villa of Dominik Skutecký with its garden, a permanent exhibition of his painting is open to the public; after renovation in 2020–2022 it presents his work in thematic rooms, including the Hall of Italian Art and the Salon. The gallery was named Gallery of the Year for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Permanent exhibition

Admission & discounts

Free admission is granted to holders of RGS, RG ČR, ZMS, AMG, AICA, ICOM and UNESCO cards, journalists and supervising teachers of organised school groups. Employees of the BBSK and holders of valid ZSSK travel tickets with Banská Bystrica as their destination station also receive a 20% discount.
