About the museum
The Central Slovak Museum is one of the oldest museum institutions in Slovakia. It was founded in 1889 as a town museum on the proposal of Dr Štefan Holesch, and the first exhibition opened in the Matej House on 17 October 1909. In 1958 the exhibition moved into the restored Thurzo House, and in 1970 the museum received its present name. Since 1973 it has also owned the Tihányi Manor House in Radvaň, where a natural science exhibition has been housed since 1989.
The Thurzo House on SNP Square is an important burgher monument with Late Gothic elements, wooden beamed ceilings and the Green Room with wall paintings. After an extensive reconstruction in 2019–2022, the permanent exhibition Tranzithistory was opened here on 25 June 2022, with more than 2,000 collection objects from archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and fine art.
The Matej House in the castle grounds offers the exhibition History of the Town of Banská Bystrica, with a treasury, an archaeological section, an armoury of cold weapons, a collection of guild objects, and Gothic sculpture and painting. The Tihányi Manor House holds the exhibition Nature of Central Slovakia, with about 2,400 exhibits in eight rooms. The museum also prepares exhibitions and programmes for schools and families.
