About the museum
The Idrija Geopark Visitor Centre on Prelovčeva ulica also houses the Idrija Tourist Information Centre. Its main feature is the permanent exhibition “Zapisano v kamninah” (Written in the Rocks), which tells the story of how the Idrija area was formed through models, mock-ups, exhibits, animations and video presentations.
The exhibition covers geological history and the processes that shape our planet, the rocks and fossils, the flora and fauna of the geopark, the karst landscape and the cultural features of Idrija and its countryside. It is based on tectonics and its role in shaping the area where the famous mercury mine lies; the most important tectonic feature is the Idrija Fault (idrijski prelom).
Visits are possible with a guide interpreter or on your own; the research guide “Čarobna pustolovščina z dinozavrico Zjalco”, the TurfHunt app and the audio guide “Sprehod s Scopolijem” are also available. Three children's interactive stations are for the youngest visitors.
