About the museum
Izolana – hiša morja (Izolana – House of the Sea) presents the history of Izola with a permanent museum display. Through photographs, museum objects and digital narratives it emphasises the maritime and coastal character of the town, especially fishing and the fish-processing industry. The collection was prepared by the Izola Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in cooperation with the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum Piran; the exhibition, led by the curator Dr Nadja Terčon, was made possible by the Piran museum.
The core of the display is a ship-modelling collection on the ground floor, which was originally part of the Street Museum from 2004 and later part of the “Muzej Parenzana” (Parenzana Museum); on the first floor are some contents of the former Parenzana Museum. The name Iz-solana, combining the Slovenian Z and the Italian S, expresses the bilingual character of the town.
The House of the Sea contains more than thirty-five ship models, the projection “Izola – digitalni otok” (Izola – Digital Island) on a model of the old town core, a memorial room of the cartographer Pietro Coppo, an exhibition on fishing and on the Ampelea and Arrigoni factories, and an interactive map of the former Parenzana railway. Educational programmes take place in the pedagogical-andragogical room.
