About the museum

The Župnijski muzej sv. Jurija was set up in 2000 at the initiative of the Piran Parish, with the participation of the Ministry of Culture, the Piran unit of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, the Restoration Centre of the Republic of Slovenia, and the association “Prijatelji zakladov sv. Jurija” (Friends of the Treasures of St George). It stands at the Baroque church of St George, which dominates Piran; together with the bell tower and the baptistery it is one of the most important Baroque sacred monuments in Slovenia.

The treasury displays church furnishings and vessels, including a silver statue of St George on horseback and a reliquary in the shape of a leg. In the space beneath the nave, in an archaeological pit, research uncovered the oldest remains of building structures from the Roman period, antiquity, the early Middle Ages, the Romanesque and Gothic periods. In the basement is a lapidarium with stone architectural elements from different periods of Piran's churches.

A special feature of the collection is the wooden model of the church of St George from 1590, the oldest wooden model in Slovenia, which shows the earlier Gothic church before the Baroque renovation. A short video shows the course of the restoration of the Baroque complex over the last twenty years. Visitors can also climb the bell tower for the view.
