About the museum
The Kraška hiša (Karst House) is set up in the so-called Romanesque house at the crossroads of the upper streets of Štanjel. The building, considered one of the oldest in Štanjel, shows the architectural features of the original Karst houses from the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
The carefully restored house tells of the ingenuity of its inhabitants, who built mainly with stone. Rainwater runs from the slate roof through stone gutters into the monumental well beside the house, which clearly shows how important water was for the Karst.
The collection is devoted to the material folk culture of the Karst. The story of the life of the Karst people is complemented by the kamishibai (picture-story) tale “Od kamna do kraške hiše” (From Stone to the Karst House).
