About the museum

The MUZA museum and gallery are run by the institute NLB MUZA, which was founded in April 2020 and is wholly owned by Nova Ljubljanska banka. The institute looks after two collections: a museum collection on money and banking, and an art collection of Slovenian women and men artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2018 the Ministry of Culture declared both collections national treasures.

The permanent exhibition of the Muzej bančništva Slovenije (Museum of Banking in Slovenia) presents the cultural heritage of money, banks and banking practices, with an emphasis on the period from 1820 to the present. The first modern financial institution in Slovenia was the Laibacher Sparkasse, founded on 4 November 1820. The museum is on the first floor of the Art Nouveau building of the former Mestna hranilnica ljubljanska (Ljubljana City Savings Bank).

The gallery section holds and presents works from the NLB art collection. Akademija MUZA is a platform for knowledge about the economical handling of money. Besides its seat in Čopova ulica, the institute also runs the exhibition space Galerija MUZA TR2 at Trg republike 2.
