About the museum

The Slovenski šolski muzej is the oldest specialist museum in Slovenia. In 1898 it was founded as the Šolski muzej slovenskega in istrsko-hrvatskega učiteljstva by the Zaveza slovenskih učiteljskih društev; it opened in the Ljubljana school at Ledina as the first museum for all Slovenes. Operations ceased in 1912 because of financial and space problems; in 1938 it was re-established as the Muzej slovenskega ljudskega šolstva. It has borne its present name since 1949.

The museum is housed in the former Ursuline schools at Plečnikov trg 1 in Ljubljana. It looks after school heritage, researches the history of upbringing and education, and holds objects, school documentation, an archive collection and a photo library.

The permanent exhibition Šola je zakon! takes visitors through education and upbringing in Slovenia from prehistory to the present day. It is designed around a long black school blackboard, from which flaps and drawers open with objects, documents and stories. The museum also presents, in its premises, an exhibition on sports heritage prepared by its department Muzej športa.
