About the museum

The Slovenski gledališki muzej is the successor to the museum founded in 1952. Today it operates as the theatre museum of the Slovenski gledališki inštitut (SLOGI), which looks after, documents, researches and presents the Slovenian theatrical heritage.

The museum is housed in a historic building at Mestni trg 17 in the old town centre of Ljubljana. The Baroque painter Fortunat Bergant died there, and at various times France Prešeren, Miha Kastelic and Miran Jarc also lived in it.

The museum's holdings are divided into an iconotheque (stage photographs, stage and costume designs, theatre programmes, posters), a theatre archive with personal legacies and manuscripts, an audio collection, a video archive and a specialised theatre library. Among the most valuable objects are the manuscripts and letters of important theatre people, including some by Cankar, and the stage sketches by Avgust Černigoj.
