About the museum

Tobačna Ljubljana was founded on 19 January 1871 and for decades left a strong mark on the city. The factory was a town within a town: it had a kindergarten, a library, a fire brigade and a mixed choir. The first product, made mostly by women workers, was the Viržinka, a cigar popular in the early 20th century. Among the objects in the collection are Filter 57 cigarettes, which have cult status.

For the 140th anniversary of its operation, Tobačna Ljubljana decided in 2011 to modernise the Tobacco Museum and move it into the new premises of the Tobačna 001 cultural centre. The display was created in close cooperation with the Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane (Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana) and Tobačna Ljubljana; the collection comprises objects and materials about the factory's past and the lives of its workers.

The museum offers insight into part of Ljubljana's industrial heritage. The Tobačna 001 cultural centre stands on the site of the former tobacco factory; the main entrance is from Bleiweisova cesta.

Getting there & parking

The main entrance to the Tobačna 001 cultural centre is from Bleiweisova cesta, through the grey metal fence in the area of the Upravna enota Ljubljana.
