About the museum
The house on Cesta na Rožnik, today Cesta 27. aprila, was built in 1910 for the postal official Leopold Klepec. After the First World War it was bought by Ivan Hribar, then ambassador in Czechoslovakia, and four years later he moved in with his wife Marija and daughter Zlatica. He adapted the architecture, interior and surroundings to his needs and taste: he enlarged the plot; in 1933, according to designs by the architect Josip Costaperaria, he replaced the wooden veranda with an extension housing a library and a study; and in 1940 a bunker was added.
The villa served as a residence until 2000, when its last resident and owner, Hribar's daughter Dr Zlatica Hribar, died. It was built in the spirit of the bourgeois villas of the late 19th and early 20th century, which reflected the status of the new social class of the Slovene middle class (meščanstvo). After its renovation in 2021 it is managed by the Muzej in galerije mesta Ljubljane (Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana).
The permanent exhibition Ivan Hribar in ljubljansko meščanstvo (Ivan Hribar and Ljubljana's Middle Class) gives visitors an insight into the life of a Slovene bourgeois family at the start of the 20th century, and the villa is a tribute to Ivan Hribar and his daughter Zlatica.
