About the museum
The CIARGA (Centre d'Interpretació de l'Aviació Republicana i la Guerra Aèria) is in Santa Margarida i els Monjos, in the Serral area, within the former Republican airfield of Los Monjos. This airfield formed part of the so-called Vespre de la Gloriosa, a network of airfields in the Penedès that also included those of Pacs, Sabanell and Santa Oliva. Today the centre is the leading reference on aviation and the Civil War in Catalonia.
The museum project was developed by DIDPATRI of the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Estació Territorial de Recerca Penedès (Institut d'Estudis Penedesencs), Santa Margarida i els Monjos town council and the Asociación de Aviadores de la República (Association of Airmen of the Republic), with the support of the Directorate General for Democratic Memory of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The exhibition explains the development of aviation during the war, the significant foreign involvement on both sides, and the air war at the front and in the rear. It also shows the local history of the airfield: how a Republican airfield was built, what aircraft were there, what the workshops were like and who served in the squadrons. It combines staged displays and original pieces with multimedia resources, a replica of the Polikarpov I-15 “Xato” fighter and a large audiovisual. The visit is completed by the Refugi del Serral and by routes through other Penedès sites related to aviation in the war.
