About the museum

The term of Sant Martí is first mentioned in the year 984. Galí, founder of the Santmartí lineage, may have built a tower on the hill; his son Guillem, veguer (royal magistrate) of Sant Martí, began the castle at the end of the 10th or beginning of the 11th century. In the 11th century rooms were added, and after the Almoravid attack of 1108 a fortified enclosure with wider and higher walls was planned.

When the lineage became extinct at the end of the 13th century, the term passed to its successors, and in the 14th century the comital family turned it into a fortified palace. It later belonged to the Cervelló family, who sold it to the Pia Almoina in 1481, and many reforms were carried out.

The ruin began during the First Carlist War, when several buildings were set on fire, and looting left the complex in a state of rubble. In 1963 a commission began the clearing and restoration, which continued with the rehabilitation of other wings from 1988 onwards. Today the guided visit covers the castle, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria and the former municipal cistern, recently restored.
