About the museum
Esperanto has a special name in Subirats: Lluís M. Hernández Yzal (1917–2002), a pharmacist from Barcelona who lived in Sant Pau d’Ordal from 1945, became interested in this language at the end of the fifties. He corresponded with people all over the world and began to gather books and magazines in Esperanto. In 1968 the seed of what would become the Museu d’Esperanto de Subirats was set up in an annex of his pharmacy, and in 1974 the museum opened to the public on Zamenhof Street, 12, with one of the best private Esperanto collections in the world.
The museum was open until the end of 2019. The documentary collection is now kept in the Historical Archive of the Subirats town council and, to facilitate consultation, the Centre de Documentació de l’Esperanto has opened to the public, with a permanent exhibition presenting a selection of objects from Hernández Yzal's collection: books, postcards, posters, magazines, photographs, badges, plaques, games and sculptures.
The visit can be combined with a self-guided route on Esperanto through Sant Pau d’Ordal, which explains Subirats's link with this language.
