About the museum

The Antiquarium is the site museum of the Complutum Archaeological Park, the only Roman city open to visitors in the Community of Madrid and the origin of present-day Alcalá de Henares. The building was constructed between 2007 and 2010 beside the excavation site, next to the Henares river, and on 2 December 2024 the Community of Madrid opened it as an interpretation centre, coinciding with the anniversary of Alcalá's designation as a World Heritage City.

Its 1,000 m² of permanent exhibition are spread across eight thematic spaces with interactive resources devoted to daily life, the economy, construction and religion of the city. The pieces, from the park's excavations, illustrate life between the 1st and 5th centuries AD and relate to the remains of the forum, the basilica and the House of Hippolytus.

The centre also has a temporary exhibition room and facilities for research, dissemination and heritage conservation. It forms part of the Community of Madrid's Plan de Yacimientos Visitables and is managed by the Municipal Archaeology Service of the Alcalá de Henares City Council.
