About the museum

The MUSEAL was born in 1991 on the initiative of the sculptor José Noja and opened in August 1993. Rather than occupying a building, it spreads its collection across public streets in two stretches of the city: the one that surrounds the walls protecting the Palacio Arzobispal and the one that follows the Vía Complutense. Sources give between about fifty and about sixty pieces and a route of more than two kilometres, with the aim of becoming the largest open-air sculpture museum in Europe.

The works combine very diverse styles and techniques, from figurative art, Cubism and Conceptualism to abstraction. Most of the artists are Spanish sculptors, although there are also artists from the rest of Europe and from America. The names represented include Pablo Serrano, Amadeo Gabino, Úrculo, Venancio Blanco and José Noja himself.

In 2021 the Ministry of Culture and Alcalá de Henares city council financed the drafting of a project to adapt the museum, under the aid programme for the conservation and promotion of assets declared World Heritage.
