About the museum
The Museo Luis González Robles was founded in 2000, when this collector, patron and curator donated his private collection to the University of Alcalá. For more than two decades (1950–1974) González Robles was a major promoter of Spanish avant-garde art from his post at the Dirección General de Bellas Artes (Directorate-General of Fine Arts), and he played a key role in the international profile of Spanish artists and in their links with Ibero-America.
The collection holds more than 2000 pieces: over 200 paintings, nearly 1000 works on paper and more than 70 sculptures, with a focus on contemporary art of the second half of the 20th century, as well as Ibero-American folk art and an art library.
The museum’s room is on the first floor of the Rectorado, the former Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, a 16th-century building declared a World Heritage Site. It occupies the three central windows of the façade, in what was Cisneros’ library, in the Patio de Santo Tomás de Villanueva. Its programme consists of temporary exhibitions related to its own holdings, monographic shows of established or emerging artists and, every year, the exhibition in honour of the Premio Cervantes, which is presented in the Paraninfo of the University. The shows are usually accompanied by workshops, educational itineraries and guided tours for schools and colleges. The holdings are displayed permanently in the neighbouring Museo de Arte Iberoamericano.
