About the museum
The Sánchez Mejías Archive-Museum is dedicated to Ignacio Sánchez Mejías (1891–1934), bullfighter, writer and patron, whose death inspired Federico García Lorca’s “Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías”. On 11 August 1934 he was seriously gored in the bullring of Manzanares and died two days later. The town where that goring took place now pays tribute to his life with this museum.
The collection comes from a donation by the family of the honoree and serves both as an archive and as an exhibition space. It brings together photographs, press cuttings, manuscripts of his newspaper articles, applications to stage his plays, expense sheets of Real Betis Balompié, the club he presided over, references to aviation, invitations and texts of lectures, as well as extensive correspondence with the writers of the so-called Silver Age.
The route takes Lorca’s poem as its starting point to show the many facets of a man who died at the age of 43: bullfighter, president of a football club and of the Seville Red Cross, theatre impresario, pilot, journalist, playwright and novelist. It also recalls his role in promoting the sessions that the Ateneo de Sevilla devoted to Góngora on the third centenary of his death, regarded as the founding event of the Generation of ’27. The museum is part of the network of municipal museums of Manzanares.
