About the museum

The painter Antonio López Torres (1902–1987) wanted to donate his work to his home town, and Tomelloso town council committed itself to building a museum to house it. The commission went to the architects Fernando Higueras and José Manuel Benito, and work began in 1981. The museum opened on 19 April 1986 with a speech by the playwright Francisco Nieva, a friend and admirer of the artist.

The building, of exposed white concrete, was declared an Emblematic Building of the 20th Century by the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha (Junta de Comunidades). In addition to the permanent collection rooms, it has a temporary exhibition room and a municipal auditorium with capacity for 250 people, where lectures, concerts, theatre and educational activities are programmed throughout the year.

The permanent collection occupies two rooms and brings together around 65 oil paintings and more than 40 drawings by López Torres, with landscapes of La Mancha, scenes of rural life and portraits. Among the best-known works are “El pastor”, “Muchachos cogiendo hierba” and a self-portrait from 1921. The museum offers free self-guided visits, an audio guide and activities for groups with advance booking.
