About the museum

The Museo del Carro y Aperos de Labranza arose from a municipal initiative of the 1960s to gather the most representative items of the farming tasks and everyday life of Tomelloso's ancestors. In 1968 the town council commissioned the dry-stone master Pablo Moreno to build a bombo (a dry-stone dome), which was inaugurated on 20 October 1970 and built with more than two million stones laid without mortar.

The Asociación de Amigos del Museo del Carro (Friends of the Cart Museum Association) has enriched the collections with disinterested donations. Since 1996 a school-workshop project has operated on the same site, which has expanded the facilities and built, among other things, a cocinilla manchega (a traditional La Mancha kitchen).

The exhibition is arranged in settings that recreate the agricultural and wine-making past of the comarca: the forge, the carpentry workshop, the farm implements, the threshing floor (era), the cellar (bodega), the cave and the jaraíz, the cocinilla and the bombo. Carts, tools, machinery, graphic documents and photographs help show how the land was worked and how wine was made in La Mancha.
