About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Gregorio Prieto, a painter of the Generación del 27 (Generation of '27) born in Valdepeñas. The Fundación Gregorio Prieto was established on 12 March 1968 at the wish of the artist himself, and the museum opened on 19 February 1990 in the presence of King Juan Carlos I. It is now run by the foundation, a non-profit body.
It occupies a 17th- and 18th-century La Mancha manor house with a heraldic lintel, a studded door and a courtyard with Tuscan columns and an upper gallery. The central part of the house and the cellar are original, and the rest is new. At the end of 2021 it was renamed the Museo Gregorio Prieto, and after roughly two and a half years of renovation work focused on accessibility, energy efficiency, new rooms, digitisation of the collection and audio guides, it reopened at the beginning of 2023.
The collection exceeds 5,000 works by Gregorio Prieto, of which a rotating selection is shown, and also includes works by Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico and other artists, thirteen original drawings by Federico García Lorca and an archive of letters from figures of the Generación del 27. It also houses the award-winning works of the Certamen de Dibujo Gregorio Prieto, held since 1991.
