About the museum
The mill of La Chalana was built in 1930, is the most modern mill in the municipality of Laviana, and began operating in 1931. It was built in stages: first a rectangular structure with two millstones, to which a third was later added, followed by a small storehouse beside the entrance and a dwelling on the upper floor.
In 1934 it passed into the name of Ramón Argüelles García. During the Civil War it was confiscated by the Republican side, which used it to supply its troops, and at the end of the conflict it was returned to its owner. In 1948 the rabil de escanda, a building for hulling spelt, was added beside the mill; it fell out of use a few years later because of the scarcity of this cereal.
After the death of Ramón Argüelles in 1966, the mill passed to two heirs, who each ran it for one year until it closed in 1985. It no longer grinds grain today, but the building, completely restored, has been open to visitors since 10 August 2013 as a teaching centre on the traditional production of flour.
