About the museum
The Casa del Agua de Rioseco (Rusecu) is a centre for learning about the history of water use and raising awareness of its importance as a natural resource. It was built on an estate ceded by the Sobrescobio town council, in the Redes Natural Park, where the Tanes-Rioseco reservoir system is located; this system supplies water to almost 80 % of the Asturian population. The building and its surroundings were completed in 2001.
The interior brings together part of the contents of the Spanish pavilion at the Zaragoza 2008 Expo, which was devoted to water, as well as audiovisuals and interactive displays on the landscape that the waters of Spain's rivers, and especially those around Redes, have shaped. It also explains technical advances for using water resources more efficiently and in a way that respects the environment.
Outside there is an area devoted to the machines that used water as motive power, including a water mill for grinding flour and a mazapilas, which used the currents of the pastures to scare away wild boar, bears and wolves and thus protect crops and livestock.
