Museo de la Minería y de la Industria de Asturias (MUMI)

Museum of Asturian mining and industrial heritage in El Entrego, with a full-scale replica of a mine and the San Vicente shaft.

Opening hoursAdmission €9.50 Partially accessible

About the museum

The MUMI was conceived in the late 1980s, in the midst of the industrial and mining restructuring of Asturias. Its aims were to conserve the industrial heritage that has defined Asturian identity since the 19th century, to support the regions most affected by the crisis and to diversify the region’s economy.

It was built on the former spoil heap of the San Vicente shaft, in El Entrego (San Martín del Rey Aurelio), in the heart of the Nalón basin. It opened on 4 March 1994 and was one of the first museums in Spain to recognise the cultural value of mining and industrial heritage.

The galleries are arranged around a central courtyard where the headframe (castillete) stands, and offer a historical overview of the development of mining and its relationship with scientific progress. In addition there is Mina Imagen, a full-scale reproduction of an underground mine with machinery like that used by miners, and the San Vicente shaft, preserved outdoors. Behind the building there is a hectare of green space. The museum also holds a specialist archive and library, which can be consulted by appointment.
