About the museum

The Bodega-Aula de Interpretación de Mucientes occupies two 16th-century underground cellars in the cellar quarter of this village in the province of Valladolid, within the Denominación de Origen Cigales area. These caves were used for about four centuries to make and store wine, until the year 2000. The town council acquired them in 2004 and transformed them into a museum, which has been part of the Asociación de Museos del Vino de España since 2007.

The exhibition is structured around the container rather than the content: visitors descend about ten metres underground to learn how the cellars were built, their phases and elements, as well as the old machinery and tools. Thematic panels and reconstructions explain the wine-making process, its history, traditional production, typical gastronomy and some popular myths. It is aimed at all ages.

The interior stays cool, at temperatures between 8 and 13 °C, so warm clothing is recommended. The visit can be combined with a walk through the cellar quarter, whose winemaking tradition goes back more than five hundred years.
