About the museum
The Colección Arte Contemporáneo, transferred to the Patio Herreriano, was created in 1987 at the initiative of the Asociación Colección Arte Contemporáneo (ACAC), promoted by the chairman of Unión Fenosa, Julián Trincado, with the support of many private Spanish companies. It was an unprecedented model of patronage for protecting and disseminating Spanish art and recovering little-known works of the avant-garde. The collection brings together more than 1,000 works, from 1918 to the present, and is still growing.
The Valladolid City Council provides the building and resources and set up the Fundación Patio Herreriano to run the museum, which opened in 2002. It is housed in one of the cloisters of the monastery of San Benito, a Renaissance work by Juan de Ribero Rada, restored with interventions that give the complex austerity and clarity.
The collection has three strands: the first half of the 20th century (Surrealism, Cubism and the sculpture of the 1930s, linked to Ángel Ferrant), art after the Spanish Civil War (the El Paso group, the 1970s, new figuration and abstraction) and 21st-century art. The 2010 display filled all the rooms with themes such as figuration, matter, abstraction, objects and references, new realities and urban environments. The museum also keeps a documentation centre with the Ángel Ferrant collection and the Buades archive.
