About the museum
CaixaForum Lleida is housed in the historic Cinema Viñes, a modernista building by the architect Francesc de Paula Morera Gatell on the Avenida de Blondel, on the site once occupied by La Eléctrica del Cinca. It was originally the social headquarters of the Juventud Católica, and the motto AMDG engraved on the façade is still preserved.
It opened in 1919 as the Teatro Viñes, in homage to the celebrated local pianist Ricard Viñes, who came from Paris to inaugurate it; it was conceived as a venue for performances with three hundred seats. In 1928 it was renamed Cine Viñes and became one of the best silent cinemas in the city. In 1932 it added sound film and enjoyed a second golden age after the war. Later it survived as a second-run cinema until it closed in 1978.
In 1985 the Montepío acquired it with the idea of expanding its offices, but after a thorough transformation by the architect Juan de Ramos, who recovered both façades of the building, it became in 1989 the new cultural centre of the “la Caixa” Foundation. Today the centre offers free-admission exhibitions, cycles, lectures, concerts and activities for general audiences, families and schools.
