About the museum
In 1914 the Diputació and the Lleida City Council promoted the creation of the Museu d'Art de Lleida, which opened in 1917 with works by the Diputació’s grant holders, deposits from the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid and donations from the painter Jaume Morera i Galícia. When Morera donated works by Carlos de Haes in 1924, the museum was renamed Museu d'Art Jaume Morera. In this first phase it was housed in the Sant Lluís market and in the former Hospital de Santa Maria.
The Civil War was a turning point: for almost forty years the museum was practically inactive and its collections were dispersed. It reopened in the Hospital de Santa Maria between 1959 and 1969 and in 1975 moved to the former convent of the Roser. In the 1980s it re-emerged as an institution, and since 1993 it has been owned exclusively by the municipality.
In 2007 it moved, initially on a provisional basis, to the former Casino Principal building on calle Major. In 2016 the first steps were taken to set up its permanent home in the Antiga Audiència building at Rambla de Ferran, 13, whose rehabilitation began in 2019. During the works the museum renewed its image, adopted the popular name MORERA with the description Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Lleida, and created the Constel·lacions platform to consult the collection.
In 2024 the new headquarters opened, with a collection of more than 5,000 pieces, as a centre for the conservation, research and dissemination of 20th- and 21st-century art from Lleida.
