About the museum
The Casa da Navegación occupies the well-known Casa Carvajal in the historic centre of Baiona. It is a municipal institution whose collection shows the historical, urban and social development of the Real Villa, with particular attention to its trade relations with Europe and America and to the role of its port in the history of Atlantic navigation. In 2017 the Consello da Xunta recognised it as a museum centre.
The collection brings together its own holdings, old documents from its historical archive, facsimiles of documents related to the town that are kept in other museums, pieces from archaeological and underwater excavations in the municipality and along its coast, and pieces, documents and portolan charts on loan from private collections.
The exhibition is organised into four thematic areas and thirteen modules. The ground floor is devoted to the geographical context and to the origin and development of the town. The first floor covers the port and its social, urban and historical significance, and the art and dangers of navigation, with references to wrecks and shipwrecks. The visit is completed by the replica of the caravel Pinta, moored in the port.
