About the museum
The Roman villa of Toralla is in the Canido district of Vigo, next to O Vao beach, on the former Mirambell estate. The Mirambell family was the first to find remains on its property. After a long legal dispute, the council expropriated the land and excavations continued for years, until the villa was fully excavated.
The dwelling was inhabited for approximately between 300 and 450 AD and is the only surviving 4th-century Roman villa in Galicia. It was a modest establishment, but it had a main house with baths heated by a hypocaust and mosaics, a secondary building for service a few metres away, and production areas. Nearby, a pre-Roman hillfort abandoned around the 1st century and a Roman necropolis were found.
The site was opened to the public in 2007. It is visited along walkways, with information panels, and is complemented by the Centro de Interpretación do Mundo Romano, installed in the former Mirambell family chalet, which dates from the 1940s. Its two floors are divided into five thematic units and display Roman pottery, coins and bronze utensils, as well as panels, models and reconstructions.
