About the museum
The Casa García de Viedma is a house dating back to the 18th century: the Catastro del Marqués de la Ensenada of 1752 already documents the García de Viedma family on the Calle Real in Armilla. Their estate was extensive and included several dwellings, stables, granaries and orchards, where the family’s tenant farmers (caseros) also lived. The façade keeps two coats of arms, one of the García de Viedma family and one of the González Saavedra family, with whom they intermarried.
After its restoration, part of the original structure was kept, with arcaded courtyards and rooms around them, and the spaces were adapted to new needs, including accessibility and the removal of architectural barriers. Today the house works as a cultural centre: it houses the municipal library, rooms for temporary exhibitions, multipurpose rooms, an assembly hall, the Museo Etnográfico and several courtyards (the Patio Blanco, the Patio del Aljibe and the Patio de las Columnas) used for concerts, theatre and educational activities.
The Museo Etnográfico occupies the oldest part of the house, with the former stables and farm-tool stores, and a room with six large clay storage jars. It displays objects from domestic and rural life, such as a butcher’s table, copper cauldrons, a wood-burning kitchen range and a 19th-century radio.
