About the museum
The Museo Sefardí de Granada opened in 2013, the year in which Spanish nationality was granted to the descendants of the Sephardic Jews expelled after the Alhambra Decree, signed by the Catholic Monarchs in this very city. It is a private initiative of the Chevalier family, descended from conversos, and it occupies a typical house in El Realejo.
El Realejo was the Jewish quarter of Granada before the expulsion of 1492, known in Muslim times as Garnata al-Yahud. The Jewish community remained in the city for more than fifteen centuries and produced figures such as Samuel Ibn Nagrella, who gave the city a system of public baths, and Yehudá Ibn Tibón, physician, translator, vizier and poet.
The house displays objects of everyday life, city maps and a library specialising in Jewish subjects. Its route recreates, as a miniature visit, the places of worship, trade and crafts of the former Jewish quarter, and includes a collection of objects used in Jewish worship, a complete ceramic kitchen and a small patio in Sephardic style.
