About the museum

The Centro José Guerrero was created to bring the personal collection of the painter José Guerrero to the province of Granada and to disseminate his work. Its genesis began in 1989 and it opened in 2000. It is the most important collection of the artist's work in existence, and the museum project and the centre's programme are built around it: the centre conserves, exhibits, disseminates and researches the collection, and also promotes contemporary art and culture.

The seat is a building from 1892, constructed as a warehouse to a design by Modesto Cendoya; in 1901 it became a printing works, and between 1939 and 1983 it housed the newspaper Patria. It was rehabilitated in 2000 by the architect Antonio Jiménez Torrecillas, with the collaboration of the artist Gustavo Torner, who adapted it to the demands of present-day museology; the work received an award from the Colegio de Arquitectos de Granada in 2003. The interior is organised as an ascending route that culminates in a viewing room overlooking the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel.

The centre is on Calle Oficios, in the heart of the Alcaicería, the old merchants' quarter of the Arab medina, very close to the Lonja and the Madraza. The collection spans from the artist's training in Granada, Madrid and Europe, with works from the 1940s, to his New York period of abstraction and expressionism, with pieces such as Autorretrato, Signos, Variaciones azules, Grey Sorcery and Black Ascending.
