Casa-Museo de Antonio Machado

20th-century boarding house in the old town of Segovia where the poet Antonio Machado lived between 1919 and 1932, with his room kept intact.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

Antonio Machado arrived in Segovia on 25 November 1919 to take up the chair of French at the Instituto General y Técnico. A few days later he moved into the boarding house run by Doña Luisa Torrego, at number 5 Calle de los Desamparados, and he had a room there until he left the city in 1932. During those years he was a very engaged neighbour in Segovian life, helped to found the Universidad Popular, and enjoyed a very productive period as a writer.

Years after the poet's death, the Universidad Popular bought the property and set up this modest museum. It later passed to the Real Academia de Historia y Arte de San Quirce, which turned it into a permanent tribute to Machado. In December 2024 it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, in the category of monument.

The house is modest and keeps the typology of Spanish boarding houses of the early 20th century. It has been kept as spare as it must have been when the poet lived there, and it still has the same furniture. His room is intact, and portraits of Machado hang on the walls, based on old photographs or painted in oils, drawings and posters, among them works by Rafael Peñuelas, Jesús Unturbe, Álvaro Delgado and Pablo Picasso.

The visit also includes portraits, mementos and images of Leonor and Guiomar, which evoke the atmosphere of the period. In the garden, among rose bushes and ivy, there is a copy of the bust of the poet that Emiliano Barral sculpted in 1920, and a ceramic panel by Julián López Parras.
