About the museum
The Real Casa de Moneda de Segovia stands outside the city walls, in the Eresma valley, next to the monastery of Santa María del Parral, a site declared picturesque in 1947. Philip II chose the location and the works were carried out between 1583 and 1588 to designs by Juan de Herrera. It was a mechanised mint that used the hydraulic power of the river to drive the ingenios, that is, the machines that rolled and stamped the metal, and it is one of the oldest industrial architecture buildings in Europe.
During the 17th and 18th centuries it minted silver, gold and billon coins, and its pieces bore the Aqueduct as mint mark. After a period of deterioration, the building underwent a complete restoration and today functions as a museum. The visit goes through the permanent exhibition on the minting process, with original machinery, the hydraulic room and the space devoted to coinage from Segovia.
Admission also includes the temporary exhibitions and the Aqueduct Interpretation Centre, an interactive space that tells the story of the more than 15 kilometres of the Roman aqueduct. The site also has the Jardín del Rey, which retains its original layout, with cobbled paving, pergolas and a fishing pavilion.
