About the museum
The Museo de Segovia opened in 1842 in the bishop's palace, under the supervision of the Provincial Commission for Historic and Artistic Monuments, to preserve artworks from the Desamortización (the 19th-century sale of Church and monastic property). Over the years it had several names: Museo de Pinturas, Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo Provincial and finally Museo de Segovia. In 1845 it moved to San Facundo, but from the second half of the 19th century its collections were spread across several sites until 1967, when they were reunited in the Casa del Hidalgo and the adjoining building. In 1981 its management passed to the Autonomous Community of Castile and León, although ownership remains with the State.
In 1991 the collection moved to the Casa del Sol, a building ceded to the State by the city council, and the permanent exhibition opened to the public in July 2006, after years of renovation. The building occupies a spur of the medieval enclosure, above the Clamores river and between three stretches of the city wall. The earliest references date from 1452 and document a slaughterhouse that operated until 1973. The renovation, carried out intermittently between 1986 and 2006, organised the museum around a central courtyard with a gallery.
The collection brings together archaeological, ethnological and fine arts holdings, mostly from the province of Segovia: paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the Desamortización, inscriptions and architectural fragments, and archaeological and numismatic pieces from excavations, donations and deposits. The Museo Zuloaga, housed in the church of San Juan de los Caballeros, is its branch.
