About the museum
After the writer's death in 1920, his nephew offered El Museo Canario the furniture of the bedroom in which he had died, which from 1922 formed a permanent room. In the mid-1950s the Cabildo de Gran Canaria created the Museo de Galdós and acquired the family property through an exchange with a descendant of the writer. Work to adapt the house began in 1958, with the participation of figures such as Néstor Álamo and Santiago Santana, and in 1959 the holdings of María Pérez Galdós Cobián, the writer's daughter, were acquired; they form the core of the collection.
The building, dating from the late 18th century, is an example of traditional urban architecture in Triana, on Calle Cano. A narrow entrance hall leads to the main courtyard, with a stone-curbed well and a palm tree of the species Cycas revoluta. In 2006 an extension opened at number 2 Calle Cano, and in 2011 the house reopened after a refurbishment.
The collection brings together paintings, drawings, furniture and personal objects of Galdós, his library, drawings related to the Episodios nacionales, photographs and his letters. Notable are the portrait of the writer painted by Joaquín Sorolla in 1894 and the monument by Victorio Macho, installed in the courtyard of number 2. In 2026 the Cabildo undertook a comprehensive refurbishment of the building, with an investment of more than €1.1 million, to improve energy efficiency and accessibility.
