About the museum
The museum opened on 20 December 1984 in former rooms of the Cathedral of Canarias in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its rooms are arranged around the Patio de los Naranjos, a 17th-century cloister that can be reached from Calle Espíritu Santo or from inside the cathedral through the Puerta del Aire.
The route includes the Sala de la Seda or del Tesoro, which was the cathedral treasury, with small devotional sculptures, and the Antesala de la Sala Capitular, with portraits of bishops of the Canary Islands. The Sala Capitular (chapter house), the most important room, has an oval floor plan, a design by Diego Nicolás Eduardo from the 18th century and a mosaic from the Valencian Manises factory bearing the chapter's coat of arms; it is presided over by the Christ of the Sala Capitular by José Luján Pérez, dated 1793. In the former Sala de Contaduría, 16th-century Flemish paintings and works by Canarian artists are on display.
The ground-floor rooms are devoted to sculpture, including Baroque pieces, and to religious silverwork. The permanent collection covers Hispanic sculpture from the 16th to the 19th centuries, painting from the 17th to the 20th centuries and religious silverwork.
