Museo de Bellas Artes de Gran Canaria

Future museum of Canarian art in the former Hospital de San Martín in Vegueta; opening planned for 18 December 2026.

Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-12-18). Not yet open as a museum. The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has set the opening for 18 December 2026; admission will be free the following weekend. The former San Martín centre has been closed since the start of the refurbishment in 2018.

About the museum

The 18th-century building was the first hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Hospital de San Martín, until 2002. After four years of refurbishment it opened in 2011 as San Martín Centro de Cultura Contemporánea, an interdisciplinary centre for young Canarian creators. In February 2018 a second, more extensive refurbishment began to renovate and extend it as the Museo de Bellas Artes de Gran Canaria (MUBEA).

The project envisages a living museum, with a permanent exhibition that will trace the art of the Canary Islands from indigenous art to approximately the 1980s of the 20th century. Most of the holdings will come from the Casa de Colón and the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, with contributions from the Museo del Prado and other public and private collections. The pandemic and the complexity of the works delayed the opening several times.

At the end of July 2026 the Cabildo de Gran Canaria received the completed works of the second phase, which added a glazed courtyard around a centuries-old cycad and fitted out the former hermitage as a space for presentations. About 40% of the building will open to the public, and the Cabildo has set the opening for 18 December 2026, with free admission the following weekend.
