About the museum
After the death of Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre (1887–1938), a painter, decorator and set designer born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the City Council decided to dedicate a museum to him. To form the collection, works were bought from his heirs, scattered pieces were gathered from Europe and private collections, and his brothers Miguel and Rafael donated the holdings they had kept.
The project was commissioned to the municipal architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, the artist's brother, who proposed building the museum next to the Pueblo Canario, the complex in the neo-Canarian style that he himself had designed, so that painting and architecture would complement each other. Works began in 1939 and the museum opened on 18 July 1956. The building has two storeys and a decagonal room dedicated to the Poema del Mar.
The permanent collection is arranged by themes: youth, symbolism, portraits, theatre, visions and the cycles Poema del Mar and Poema de la Tierra. The museum has been closed since December 2017. On 13 April 2026 the City Council began restoration works, which include resolving leaks, new installations and accessibility improvements, with a lift, ramps and an extension of the semi-basement.
