About the museum
The Casas del Águila y la Parra stand on Plaza Ramón Pelayo, the main square of Santillana del Mar, next to the town hall and opposite the Barreda-Bracho house, today the Parador Gil Blas. They are two civil buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries that belong to the Government of Cantabria and were restored in the late 1980s.
The Casa de la Parra, the northernmost, dates from the early 16th century and is in the Gothic style, with two pointed-arch doorways. It takes its name from a large vine (parra) that once covered its main façade, now replaced by a wood and brick latticework. The Casa del Águila, from the mid-17th century, takes its name from the eagle on the coat of arms of the Estrada Tagle family; it has a porch with two round arches facing the square and a solana running along the whole upper floor.
Between 1988 and 1991 the buildings hosted exhibitions on Cantabrian ethnography and later several art exhibitions. Today they form part of the network of cultural centres of the Government of Cantabria and can be visited freely, with no admission charge.
